With thousands of scooters selling weekly, the surging popularity of today's models is hardly a secret. But if you are ready to put down money for a scooter, you'll first need to ask yourself, "Do I look at gas powered or electric models?"
We considered the points in favor of electric motor scooters in Part 1 of this series. (If you missed it, check my site.) Now let's glance at the advantages of gas powered scooters. You may have been high on electric scooters after scanning their selling points--but gas powered (and hybrid) scooters actually have plenty to offer. As you read this, you should ask yourself, "How do I see myself using the scooter?" Answering that question will lead you to the right choice. OK, here we go.
Gas powered motor scooters win points because...
:: They can travel many more miles without refueling. Even the best batteries will need to be recharged every couple hours (or 10-15 miles), while a 1-2 gallon tank on a gas powered model can take you as far as 200 miles.
:: Gas scooters are more cost effective where speed is concerned. In other words, you can drive faster while paying proportionally less. Gas powered models in the same price tier as electric models typically go 15-25 mph faster. And if you have your heart set on jetting down the freeway, you'll very likely need a gas powered (or hybrid) scooter.
:: Gas scooters offer greater versatility. With greater acceleration punch, speed, and power, gas models are the workhorses of the scooter world. They can carry more weight, drive further, and perform better on hills and rough ground.
:: Gas scooters are typically more durable, because they're designed to handle high speeds and are frequently capable of off-road use.
:: Refueling is as quick and easy as filling a 1-2 gallon tank. With an electric scooter, it's difficult to recharge a battery on the fly (curbside outlets, anyone?), and charging takes four to eight hours.
:: Gas powered scooters work well in all seasons, but battery power is decreased by extremes cold or heat.
Are you feeling more indecisive than when you started reading? Hopefully not--but if so, take heart. There is good news: both gas and electric motor scooters are produced by highly regarded manufacturers, both represent huge fuel savings over cars and trucks, and both are a great deal better for the environment. In addition, hybrid scooters are being developed that combine the best of both fuels.
Here's a quick review. If you want to invest in a model with a very minimal environmental footprint, an electric motor scooter may be the right pick. This is all the more true if your use will be mostly urban or residential and short-range. If you want to pack your scooter like luggage and take it on long trips, then buy an electric model.
If you want a scooter that's capable of highway or off-road travel, start looking at gas powered models. You'll pay less up front for your speed fix--and you'll have a tougher, more versatile scooter. Your fuel savings won't be as high as they would be with an electric model, but getting, at minimum, 50 mpg on gasoline is nothing to roll your eyes at.

Were you looking for a subtle, sort-of-yes, sort-of-no reply? I hope not, because when it comes to scooters and the environment, the answer is resoundingly positive. A lot of prospective owners are drawn to motorized scooters because they've heard that scooters are friendly to the environment. You may be one of those people.
If so, you're likely wondering exactly what it is that makes motor scooters a green transportation alternative. Here's a rundown of the primary reasons.
First and most obviously, motorized scooters use dramatically less fossil fuel.
The gas tank of an average-sized scooter holds one to two gallons, and today's scooters easily get 50 miles per gallon, while a lot of them a lot more--some upwards of 100 mpg. Therefore, if you own a gas powered scooter, you'll probably fill up two or three times per month, and get 75-200 miles per tank. That's easily three to four times more fuel efficient than the average (non-SUV) car. What does that mean? It means three to four times less non-renewable fossil fuel consumed--which is direct conservation.
Second, by consuming less gasoline and traveling greater distances with it, motorized scooters release fewer fumes into the atmosphere.
This means that the emissions of harmful chemicals like carbon dioxide are greatly reduced. This is an added bonus since motor scooters are frequently used in urban settings. Inside city limits, their small environmental footprint helps combat the polluted air that most urban centers are forced to endure.
Third, if you buy an electric motor scooter, you can walk away from fossil fuels (oil) entirely.
When you're exploring the motor scooter market, one of the first decisions you'll need to make is whether to purchase an electric or gas powered model. Electric, battery-powered scooters are generally better for short-range travel, and environmentally speaking, their non-dependency on oil and gasoline is a huge step in the right direction. Electricity is a clean fuel source at the point of use, and battery design is improving all the time. However, if a gas powered or hybrid scooter is a better match for your lifestyle, don't feel bad--as we saw above, a gas powered scooter is still a much greener option than a car.
So let's recap. Yes, it's true that motorized scooters save you a lot of money. But better yet, the "green" rumors are accurate: You can also feel good about driving a scooter, since they contribute to a cleaner planet.

With motor scooters selling like crazy, their popularity is hardly a secret. But if you're thinking seriously about putting money down on a scooter, you need to answer the question, "Do I need a gas powered or electric model?" I've seen websites that argue the merits of one approach or the other, as if one is drastically better--but if you click around, you notice that the type of scooter they endorse is the type they are trying to sell. I won't take that stance, because there are pros and cons to consider either way. Let's consider electric scooters first.
Electric motor scooters score points because...
:: Electricity costs a lot less than gas--up to 75 percent less. Recharging an electric scooter costs mere cents a day. This is probably the most best argument in favor of an electric scooter.
:: Battery technology is continually being refined, and will continue to improve--while buying gasoline gets more painful and problematic all the time.
:: Electric scooters are environmentally green (no fumes). If your goal is to contribute to a greener planet, then give electric scooters a good long look. Gas scooters give off harmful exhaust. However, they produce dramatically fewer emissions than cars, so they're a big step in the right direction.
:: You can ride electric scooters inside the house. Just don't give in to the temptation to perform stunts like jumping the stairs.
:: You can recharge your scooter at home. Plug it in next to your cooking range, by your computer, wherever.
:: You can pack electric motor scooters on trips, because they're allowed in buses, planes, and trains--while gas powered scooters are not.
:: Maintenance is straightforward and cheap. No oil changes, for example, and the battery acids are contained, so there's no need to handle fuel.
:: Electric scooters are very quiet, almost silent (low humming sound) and they start at the push of a button. Gas scooters are louder, and can be compared to a lawnmower or small motorcycle in terms of noise output.
To recap, electric motor scooters are especially a good fit for people who foresee short-range, urban use on a predictable schedule. For example, riding around a residential neighborhood, downtown community, or campus. Using an electric model with a regular schedule will give you the downtime you need to make sure it's charged up.
After reading this overview, you may be high on electric scooters, and I don't blame you! But hang on a second--some people have demands that are a better match for gas powered scooters. Do you want a scooter with more toughness and speed? Were you hoping to take your scooter off road, or on longer trips? To hear the pro-gasoline powered argument, keep an eye out for the argument in favor of gas motorized scooters and hybrids.

3 Steps to Picking the Perfect Motor Scooter (Part 2)

Motor Scooter Sales

If you're reading this, you probably know something about the advantages of motorized scooters (huge fuel savings and a small environmental footprint, for example). You understand why scooters are selling like crazy. Now you're looking at the market, and asking some preliminary buyer's question. In Part 1 of this series, we dealt with three very basic questions. (If you missed it, check my site.) Now, as you continue to think about your actual purchase, here are 3 more important questions to help you choose the right scooter.
First, how much do you weigh? Not to get overly personal, but every motor scooter has a carrying capacity--the maximum amount of weight it can carry. If you weigh 180 lbs. or below, this question shouldn't affect you--you will be able to ride the full range of scooters on the market and get peak performance. If you weigh over 180 lbs., make sure you educate yourself about the carrying capacities of scooters you look at. Rider weight is one of the factors that influence "optimal performance" issues like acceleration rate, travel range, and hill climbing ability.
Second, where do you want to ride your scooter? On dirt paths or downtown streets? Over flat or hilly terrain? If you live in a city, and will ride primarily on asphalt or concrete, an electric motor scooter may meet your needs. If you want to go off-road now and then, or you frequently deal with hilly, uneven terrain that places higher demands on a motor, a gas powered or hybrid model might be in the running. Relatively flat, even streets are the ideal riding surfaces for motor scooters of all types, leading to maximum speeds and efficiency.
However, gas powered models are the workhorses of the scooter world. If you want a tough utility-type scooter, but still want to go the electric route, look for a scooter with a high watt motor (300 watts or above)--and plan to spend some money. If you weigh over 180 lbs., be sure to buy a scooter with an appropriately higher wattage rating. You might also want to consider a hybrid model that combines the best of both worlds, gas and electric.
Third, where do you want to take your scooter? As in, where do you want to pack it? Here's where portability becomes an issue. Motor scooters of all types are collapsible these days, and can be stored in a closet or under a desk. But there's considerable variety when it comes to weight, since scooters can tip the scales at anywhere from 30 to 100 lbs. How much weight do you want to transport? When the scooter is folded, what will its folded dimensions need to be in order to fit in a closet or trunk? Also, ask yourself whether you Will want to take your scooter on trips using public transit like planes, trains, or buses. Electric scooters are allowed in these instances, while gas powered models are usually not.
Are you beginning to get a picture of what you're looking for? Prioritize your "lists of demands," then eliminate any models or brands that don't provide what you want. (If "hot chrome paint job" is high on your list, more power to you!) Ranking your performance and style needs will help you evaluate your finalists. At that point, if you're starting to get a good idea of what you're after, all you need is some last minute pre-purchase advice.

What's Holding You Back From Getting a Trailer For Your Scooter?

There's never anything wrong with taking time to reflect on what you can accomplish with a mobility scooter trailer. Thinking about the costs, function, accessibility issues and travel opportunities of are all part of responsible planning. Yet through all that thinking, something may prevent you from acting on your thoughts. Perhaps you fear that a motor scooter trailer won't be easy to operate. Maybe you're not familiar with the laws. These too, are legitimate concerns would benefit from a little pre-shopping research.

The problem with thinking without taking action is that it can lead to over-analyzing and procrastination. It can lend toward unnecessary pickiness, and it just doesn't begin the solve the problems that a motor scooter trailer can solve. We're not suggesting impulsive purchasing - that can be just as detrimental as not buying a medical scooter trailer at all. But we do want you to acknowledge that in order to start employing the benefits that a personal scooter trailer can provide now, you may have to do some alternative thinking.

By alternative thinking, we mean things like accepting alternative colors, alternative features, and of course, alternative costs. In other words, you can ask yourself, "What am I willing to give up in order to get the 3 wheel or 4 wheel scooter trailer that I need right now?" You never want to sacrifice quality and we certainly aren't suggesting that you do that. We're suggesting instead that you consider minimizing certain restrictions you may have inadvertently placed on yourself in an attempt to purchase the perfect electric motor scooter trailer.

While looking at a trailer that you hadn't previously considered, evaluate it's positive qualities, and see if you can picture yourself accomplishing the same goals with this alternative light scooter trailer. Following this practice, you'll literally increase the size of your selection, and ultimately end up with a trailer sooner than had you insisted on finding a trailer that exactly matched your prerequisites.

We've heard about electronic scooters already, but don't really understand what it means. And while we ARE aware that electronic scooters run on, well, electricity, there's still more we need to know.

E-scooters function by linking a battery and a motor the adult kick scooter, which is found in standard gas powered scooters. Speeds and brakes are controlled via a switch that is attached to the handlebar. And because electronic scooters are a fairly new invention, laws governing them are still in process, so, technically, no rules are in place.

While there are also gas powered scooters, electric motor scooters are more convenient to use. This is because you no longer need to go to the gas station to fill up. All you need to do is plug the electric motor scooter into an electrical outlet and wait a couple of hours for it recharge fully. After which, you can start enjoying another trip around the neighborhood again.

Electronic scooters have varying speeds, too. The slowest could be at just 10 miles per house, while others can go for as fast at 30 miles per hour, enough to be included in several racing events. In addition, these are also some scooters that can easily go uphill and cut through headwinds. E-scooters glide on the road so the feeling of literally cruising the block is there. It's also very useful when you need to do quick errands and short trips to the grocery store.

And because it's a pretty new vehicle, it is also a good way to meet new people, as it makes a very interesting conversation piece. Problems with traffic will also be a thing of the past as scooters can easily maneuver through any tight jam. Never again will you be late for an appointment. Electric motor scooters also come in portable and foldable versions. If you travel around a lot, you can simply fold up or disassemble your electric motor scooter and the plane won't even scold you for it. Electric scooters can go as light as 22 pounds.

Also, you can also say goodbye to having to worry about gas money (though you might see your electric bill rise). E-scooters are also so compact that you are allowed to bring them on public transports like planes, buses and trains. Gas-powered scooters do not have this privilege. Not only that, you are not a contributor to global warming and noise as they do not emit fumes and are very silent workers. And though most people buy e-scooters as "toy", it is a lot functional than it's perceived.

In summary, electric scooters are fast becoming the transportation of choice by many people, not just hobbyists and those with limited mobility. And because demand for this equipment is increasing, it is likely to become more accessible and affordable in the years to come.

Just say the words "electric scooter" and depending on your age, a definite image comes to mind. This no doubt is due to the many different types of electric scooters available in the market today.

The fist type of electrically powered scooter is the street version of a powered skateboard. These were a metal platform with a folding handle and two inline skate wheels. These scooters were all the rage just a few years ago and as the craze started slowing down, the scooter makers redefined the toy into a transportation vehicle. Some designs even look like a mini-bike in style. These electric scooters are marketed to the affluent teen as a unique and fun way to get around. They're available both with electric and a small gasoline driven motor. Check with local authorities regarding the use of these little mini bike scooters. Some are not allowed on the road and cannot legally be ridden on the sidewalk making them less than attractive as a transportation device.

The next type of electric scooter is designed as a get around town mini motorcycle - moped. These units are marketed to 20 somethings and anyone else who needs to make quick short trips and don't want the worry or hassle of driving a car. These are perfect for city travel where grid-lock is common. Although not a full sized motorcycle, many or these units will hold 2 people and have accessories like saddle bags to carry groceries and other purchases.

This little units have a long battery life and can get to speeds up to about 30 miles per hour with good acceleration. Depending on the number of starts and stops, these electric mopeds can go about 30 miles before needed recharging. This is usually more than enough to get back and forth to the store several times without a problem. Although most are considered street legal, check to make certain any electric scooter you purchase of this type has been approved by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and if in Europe, the European Union Transportation Agency.

The final type of electrically powered scooter is marketed toward the adult and senior market. These are typically a wheelchair like device that allows for greater mobility for older people or those with limited motor abilities. These scooters are designed to be used both indoors and out with tight cornering and a long battery life. These units have a top speed of under 5 miles and hour but can go 20-30 miles on a charge. It's a mobility device more than a distance transportation vehicle.

All three types of electric motor scooters have one thing in common and that's the need for constant charging. This is where the weakness of electrically powered anything really comes into play. If a limited mobility scooter runs out of power, it may not be such a big deal as they're typically used only for short trips away from home and around the house.

If however, you find yourself several miles from home on a motorcycle type electric scooter, this can be a problem. With no power and your recent purchases in hand, the return trip home might be long and difficult pushing your scooter.

In the end, the electric scooter industry is alive and well providing products that fit a growing and diverse market.

Becoming Independent With Mobility Electric Scooters

Motor Scooter Sales

No need to feel disabled any longer. Advanced mobility electric scooters can provide independence for the handicapped, disabled or elderly.

There has been much advancement in the field of wheelchairs, specifically mobility wheelchairs. But now there is something even more versatile, mobility electric scooters. When it comes to the elderly or handicapped mobility scooters may be the best thing since sliced bread.

In the past disabled persons would lose out on many uplifting activities. But with the innovations in mobility scooters, the elderly and handicapped are not feeling quite as old or as feeble as they once were. Why? When you can get around almost as well as active healthy people you can return to being a part of the family or community. Independence is once again your ally. The ability to get around the house or out in public once again can be a major boost in a persons self worth. No more dependence on others to perform common everyday tasks.

Motorized electric scooters for people with a handicap are fast becoming the way of the future. With technological advances being made with regard to electric mobility scooters it's no wonder they have taken the disabled world by storm. It's a thrill seeing a 90 year old man walking his dog with the help of a mobility electric scooter, something that he wouldn't have been possible just a few short years ago. But now there is practically nowhere a person can't go with the help of an electric motor scooter.

There are gas motor scooters and electric motorized scooters, but for the handicapped gas scooters are out and electric is in. No need for gas, just plug it in for a recharge and then off you go with full independence once again. These wonderful scooters are getting faster and lighter. Plus, the scooter batteries have drastically improved, allowing much longer periods of driving without the need for a recharge. Wouldn't it be nice being able to scoot around all day without the need for a charge?

Another advantage of mobility electric motor scooters is the cost. They are not only becoming increasingly less expensive, but if a person is disabled or handicapped it may even be possible to have Medicare or other medical insurance pick up some or all of the tab.

When purchasing an electric scooter be sure to take it for a test drive before buying. The most important thing is making sure that your motorized scooter is comfortable. By purchasing a comfortable scooter it'll be a pleasant drive anywhere you go. Another consideration is the cost. If at all possible have your health insurance company pay for part of the price. But even if you have no insurance it is well worth the price. No price can be put on being independent and mobile, especially if you've been laid up for awhile.

One of the many options available in mobile electric scooters is their number of wheels. There are models that have either 3 wheels or 4 wheels. The 3 wheel scooters are typically lighter in weight. The 4 wheel models are typically heavier, but may be a little better balanced when going quickly around a turn. Two wheels in the front make for a more stable vehicle around sharp corners. Once again, it is wise to test drive before buying.

There are many different options including colors, sizes, weights, number of wheels, battery capacity and the types of seats. If chosen carefully an electric scooter can become one of the best purchases ever made for the handicapped, disabled or elderly.
