Helmet Visor Cleaning: Keep Your Visor Scratch Free

8 February 2010 No Comment

Although at first a motorcycle helmet visor does not seem terribly important, the face-shield is actually vitally important to your safety and not only in the unfortunate event of an accident. The shield itself can help prevent accidents but, in order to do its job properly, your visor needs to be taken care of.

Helmet visors get dirty very easily, it is part and parcel of their job. All the small particles of dirt and the flies that would hit your face hit the visor instead. Of course, if your visor gets too dirty, there can be problems with visibility. In order to keep your visor and you safe, it will need to be cleaned frequently. However, there are certain problems with cleaning motorbike helmet visors.

Chemical cleaning products, for example, can harm the material of the visor and also interact badly with any surfaces that it already has. Iridium and mirrored visors are especially vulnerable to this problem.

Instead of expensive cleaning products, most visor manufacturers recommend that their products be washed by immersion in warm water. Ordinary soap is not usually a problem, but it is possible that using soap might blur or streak the visor, causing just as much of an issue seeing through the visor.

You will also need to wipe down the visor to remove any stubborn marks there might be. This is another process that requires care, though. A rough cloth might scratch the surface, so it is important to use a soft cloth, such as a microfiber cloth. Another important piece of advice, even with a soft cloth, is do not rub too hard. Small particles of dirt might get caught between the cloth and the visor and, if you wipe too hard, even with the softest cloth you can find, then those pieces of dirt could scratch the visor just as easily. It goes without saying that scratches can ruin a visor and should be avoided at all cost.

Taking care of your helmet visor can help prevent serious problems, not to mention save you money as you won’t need to replace it as often.  If you still are unsure or you would like to be especially careful, then there are specialist cleaning kits available as well.
