Some Basics about Motorcycle Safety Clothing for New Bikers

11 August 2009 No Comment

Are you lucky enough to have bought a new Harley? The fun and thrills of hitting the open road on a motorcycle have really been catching on across the country. If you are new to biking, you should know the fundamentals about what kind of clothing to wear. Wearing gear designed for riding motorcycles is a smart move that may save you from getting bruises or even save your life. Here are some of the basics.
Although motorcyclists are known to prize their individuality, wise and seasoned riders know that it's OK to wear safety gear like everyone else; of course, the way to individuality is through the styles and colors you choose. But the basics that everyone should own are: helmet, jacket, boots, and gloves.

The Helmet

In many countries such as France where motorcycle riders are everywhere, strict helmet laws in place that do not even allow a rider to go without. The reason is simply that helmets have a proven track record of saving lives! A helmet will greatly reduce the chance of injury as well as improve a rider's chances of surviving a crash at any speed. They come in two basic styles: open or full-face; the type you like best is what you should wear. Purchase a high quality helmet that will not impair your vision and that has an adequate amount of polysterene foam to absorb the energy from impact.

The Jacket

A good, solid leather jacket made specifically for motorcycle riding is essential to staying safe in all kinds of weather. They are generally reinforced with armor or other shock absorbing and deflecting materials at the elbows, shoulders, and back. In order to reduce injuries, the material should allow a rider to slide after a fall instead of catching on the pavement and bouncing. Many riders choose to wear leather chaps as well to protect their legs: these can have reinforced hips and knees.

The Gloves

Motorcycling gloves with reinforced palms are another essential element of safety wear. Some have attached gauntlets that protect the wrists and keep hands warmer during cold months. Weatherproofing, water resistance, insulation, and breathability are all features you should look for when selecting the right gloves.

The Boots

Stiff-soled motorcycle boots will not only help a rider's feet stay firmly on the pegs, they will also go a long way toward preventing injuries to the foot and ankle. Regular boots are generally not strong enough to hold up should a crash occur, leaving feet vulnerable. Choose a boot with a low, broad heel for greater stability, and wear them every single time you ride even if you are not going far.
