Obeying Traffic Laws On Your Fast Electric Scooter

27 January 2010 No Comment

Motor Scooter Users are Bound By The Laws Too.

Fast electric scooters are not cars. They're not motorcycles, nor are they trucks or vans. You cannot take your fast electric scooter out onto the highway or use it to drive in the midst of general traffic. You don't need a driver's license to operate one and it doesn't need to be covered by insurance. Interestingly, these factors don't exempt you from following some of the same rules that regular motorists have to follow.

Your 3 wheel or 4 wheel motor scooter is not a bike. It's not a wheelchair, nor is it a walking instrument. You cannot drive your compact motor scooter across lawns or use it to drive along bike paths.

As you can see, that light, folding, battery-operated motor scooter puts you in a unique position - somewhere between being a motorist and a pedestrian. So in essence, you've got to follow travel rules of both!

  • These means that you must stop at intersections and crosswalks and proceed when it's safe.
  • Use the signaling mechanisms on your medical scooter (or use hand signals) to communicate with both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Don't travel too closely behind others and maintain a safe distance between you and other travelers in case you need to suddenly stop.
  • Maintain a reasonable speed within traffic, as you don't want to rush through a crowd and cause accidents, nor do you want travel so slowly as to hold up other who are trying to accomodate you.
  • Yield to quick merging traffic
  • Do not drink and drive!

You can find much more information within your personal disability scooters's user manual or research online for the specific laws in your state. The important thing is that you recognize your responsibility as a mobility scooter user and that you work to obey the laws designed to protect you and everyone else on the street or the road.
